In 1887, Sir Halford Mackinder changed how the world understood space. Before he founded the Oxford School of Geography, the discipline was treated as a dry list of state capitals and river names. Mackinder looked at the map and saw something grander: a dynamic, living system where physical terrain directly shapes human history, grand strategy, and global power. He called for a geography that didn’t just label the world, but explained it.
Today, we stand at a similar historical crossroads. The physical maps Mackinder studied haven’t disappeared, but they have been overlaid by a vast, invisible landscape: the digital domain.
